The Fortaleza, standing on a rocky outcrop at the end of the beach, today houses one of Praia da Luz's many fine restaurants. Back in the days when Portugal and Spain were sworn enemies forts were constructed to protect the beaches from invasion.
The house on top of the Fortaleza is a modern addition and the roof of the fort would originally have bristled with cannons to ward off any approaching ships.

Today the visitors come not to capture Praia da luz but to soak up the warmth and ambiance of this unspoilt village.

Luz beach, with its broad golden sand faces south and basks in the sun throughout the long summer days. This is a heaven for sun worshippers and those who love the sea.

Whilst catching a tan may be the first priority there are water sports to add fun to your day. Besides banana rides and sailing dinghies there is serious tuition in diving and windsurfing. The Ocean Club water sports centre runs kids days where everybody gets to have a try

Away from the beach the village has all the facilities for your Algarve holiday. There are several supermarkets in the village which sell both local and imported products. Many of the brands from major international companies are available here in Portuguese packaging and invariably at less than UK prices.

Around the  village are many restaurants offering a wide range of international dishes. Portuguese cooking is quite traditional compared to much of the Mediterranean cuisine and eating out can be an opportunity to sample a little of the countries culture..
