LAGOS
When the Arabs ruled the Algarve this was their capital city. Today the history lingers at every corner and blends easily with the modern visitors who stroll the streets. The appeal of Lagos is that it has retained not just its architecture but its character as well. Lagos really is Lagos.
Pass just a little time in Lagos and someone is sure to tell you about "Os Descobrimentos", It was from here that ancient mariners set out to explore the world and discover the route to India and China. It was not all for the good of science but to develop trade. Lagos became a rich port and no trade richer than that in slaves. The old slave market still stands and is now an art gallery.
Todays sailors tend to be the yachtie kind and set sail from the modern marina. No matter how ugly the architecture theres always a bustle around the cafes and restaurants that overlook the boats. From behind the marina the golden sand of Meia Praia sweeps away as far as the eye can see. On the town side of the river there are picture book coves with sheltered sandy beaches. Praia Dona Ana is a great favourite both with sun worshippers and photographers.
Once a month there is a gypsy market where you can buy the seconds of Portugals textile and shoe industry at some incredible bargain prices. Even if you don't want to buy this is a colourful spectacle not to be missed.
After the sun goes down and the restaurants empty the other Lagos comes alive. The town is a must visit venue on backpackers European itinerary and at night Lagos heaves with good natured night life. Nightclubs here stay open until the dawn and if you want to dance there's plenty of time before sunrise. The town centre bars provide a welcoming opportunity to mix in this exciting atmosphere.
